Several of my friends have had their babies before me and all I kept hearing were horror stories. I was determined not to allow these stories to affect the way I approach the birth of my own baby as I was convinced that there IS a way to make this a happy - and I don't mean pain free -, but positive and empowering experience. I heard about hypnobirthing from a friend and as I was browsing the internet for hypnobirthing instructors in my area I stumbled upon Gemma's website - and I am so glad I did!
We signed up for a course of 4 sessions and this is how our hypnobirthing journey started. We thoroughly enjoyed the classes, Gemma is not only hugely experienced in the field but she is also a lot of fun, she's got that happy glow around her that lights up the room :)
The course, the concepts she taught us, the videos we were shown, the mp3s and the various bonding and breathing techniques we learned all contributed to me being able to get rid of all the fear and anxiety in preparation for the big day that often surrounds the topic of childbirth and that often ends up being partially responsible for stressful deliveries.
The course also helped my husband help me during the birth of our baby as he was able to use the methods we learnt from Gemma to get me back to my safe and happy place whenever I felt like I was losing my strength.
Robin was born 2.5 weeks late naturally, after 22 hours of labour, using only gas and air and hypnobirthing techniques for pain relief. I truly believe that the way in which a newborn enters this world can shape its disposition, and Robin's gentle birth definitely contributed to her relaxed, calm and happy personality.
